The ideal Saturday afternoon in Highland Park

April 2026

Park once on N Figueroa between York and Avenel, there's almost always street parking near the 5600 block on a Saturday before noon. From here you can walk to most of what matters.

Start at Tropical Juice LA (5729 N Figueroa St) right when they open. Get the mango chamoy or whatever's listed on the hand-written board. It's cold, it's bright, and it sets the tone for the whole afternoon. Drink it while you walk.

Two blocks south, duck into The Quiet Life (5627 N Figueroa St). It's a skate-influenced clothing shop with genuinely good taste, caps, tees, a few accessories. Nobody will rush you. Spend fifteen minutes, maybe leave with something.

Keep heading south to Villa's Tacos (5455 N Figueroa St). Grab a table on the patio and order the highland park-style tacos, the tortillas are hand-pressed and the salsas are serious. This is lunch. Two or three tacos, a agua fresca, done.

Walk it off by cutting over to Flying Pigeon LA (4419 N Figueroa St). It's a bike shop and community space with a small courtyard that feels like a neighborhood living room. Even if you're not buying a bike, it's worth a slow lap.

Now drive or walk ten minutes east to Galco's Soda Pop Stop (5702 York Blvd). This place is genuinely one of a kind, floor-to-ceiling shelves of 500+ sodas from everywhere. Get a Mexican Coke in a glass bottle to drink while you browse, then grab a few weird ones to take home. Budget an extra twenty minutes because you will linger.

On your way back toward Figueroa, stop at Self Help Graphics & Art (1300 N Mission Rd). One of LA's most important Chicano art spaces. Check what's currently on the walls, the rotating shows are always worth your time and there's almost always something in the print shop.

By now it's late afternoon. Head to Gold Line (5607 N Figueroa St) for a drink on the patio. Order a mezcal cocktail, grab one of the outdoor seats, and just sit for a minute. You've earned it. This is a good spot for groups too if friends are joining later.

End the night at Lodge Room (104 N Ave 56). Check their calendar before you go, they book national indie and rock acts in a standing-room space that feels surprisingly intimate for how good the lineups are. Tickets are usually $15–25. There's no bad spot in the room. Get there a little early and you'll be ten feet from the stage.

That's your Saturday. One neighborhood, one car move, zero reservations required.
