A first-timer's walking tour of Highland Park

April 2026

Park once. Walk everything. That's the whole strategy for Highland Park, and it works beautifully.

Leave your car on a side street near Figueroa and York, try Meridian Street or one of the residential blocks just off that intersection. Free, easy, and you're basically already in the middle of it all.

Start at 10am: Tierra Mia on Figueroa St
Get the horchata latte. Don't overthink it, just get it. It's the right call and you'll be glad you did. Sip it while you walk north on Figueroa and start getting your bearings.

10:30am: The Quiet Life · 5627 N Figueroa St
Pop in here before the day gets busy. It's a lifestyle and streetwear shop with genuinely good taste, the kind of place where you pick up a hat and suddenly feel like you live here. Browse slowly.

11am: Tropical Juice LA · 5729 N Figueroa St
A few blocks up, grab a fresh juice. The menu changes with what's in season, so just ask what's good today. Small spot, massive flavor. Order at the window and drink it on the sidewalk like a local.

Noon: Wax Paper · 2902 Knox Ave
This is lunch and it's non-negotiable. Wax Paper is a short walk off Figueroa but absolutely worth the detour. Their sandwiches are genuinely creative, house-made spreads, unexpected combinations, perfect execution. Order whatever has a sauce you've never heard of. Trust them.

1pm: Flying Pigeon LA · 4419 N Figueroa St
Walk it off here. Flying Pigeon is part bike shop, part neighborhood anchor, and there's a good little outdoor energy to the place. Even if you're not in the market for a bike, it's worth a stop just to feel the vibe of the block.

1:30pm: Villa's Tacos · 5455 N Figueroa St
Yes, you just had lunch. Get one taco anyway. Villa's does birria-style tacos with a depth of flavor that'll make you rethink your whole afternoon. Grab a spot on the patio if there's room.

2:30pm: Galco's Soda Pop Stop · 5702 York Blvd
Cut over to York Blvd for this one. Galco's is legendary, over 500 specialty and vintage sodas lining the walls of what looks like an old corner market. Get a Mexican Coke in a glass bottle. Walk the aisles. Buy something weird from a region you've never been to. It's one of the most genuinely singular shops in all of LA.

3:30pm: The Hermosillo · 5125 York Blvd
Keep going west on York. The Hermosillo is a relaxed neighborhood bar with a great draft list and well whiskey that punches above its price. Grab a stool, rest your feet, strike up a conversation. This is the vibe of Highland Park in one room.

5pm: Antojitos Carmen · 5765 N Figueroa St
Loop back up to Figueroa for an early dinner snack. Order the quesadillas con flor de calabaza, squash blossom, melted cheese, warm tortilla. Simple and perfect.

6pm: Gold Line Bar · 5607 N Figueroa St
The evening starts here. Gold Line has a patio, good cocktails, and the kind of easy energy that makes you stay longer than planned. Great for groups, great for solo. Order something with mezcal and watch the neighborhood shift into night mode.

8pm: Lodge Room · 104 N Ave 56
Check their calendar before you come, Lodge Room books national touring indie and rock acts in an intimate standing-room space that feels like a secret. If there's a show tonight, this is your closer. If not, head to Checker Hall right next door (same address, same block) for live music and a nightcap.

You'll have walked maybe two miles total. You'll have eaten extremely well. You'll want to come back next weekend. That's Highland Park doing exactly what it does.
