A perfect night out in Los Feliz
Park once, walk everywhere. That's the move in Los Feliz. Grab a spot on Hillhurst between Franklin and Melbourne, free, usually open after 6, and you'll be within walking distance of everything on this list.
Start at Bar Covell (4628 Hollywood Blvd) around 6:30pm. It's small, candlelit, and the rotating by-the-glass list is genuinely one of the best in the city. Tell them what you like and they'll find you something weird and perfect. Budget $18–22 a glass and zero regrets.
From there, walk four minutes east to Palermo Italian Restaurant (1858 N Vermont Ave) for dinner. Snag a patio table if you can, they fill up, so a reservation ahead of time is smart. The red sauce is old-school in the best way. Get the eggplant parm and whatever pasta the server recommends. On weekend nights there's live music drifting out from inside, which makes the whole thing feel like a scene from a movie you'd want to live in.
After dinner, stroll north on Vermont to Skylight Books (1818 Vermont Ave). Yes, on a night out. Trust this. The staff picks wall alone is worth it, and the hand-written recommendation cards are genuinely charming. Next door, peek into Skylight Part Deux Arts Annex (1814 N Vermont Ave) for art books and prints. Give yourself 20 minutes and you'll leave with something you didn't know you needed.
Now head back down Vermont and cut over to The Dresden (1760 N Vermont Ave). This is the whole reason you came out tonight. Marty and Elayne have been playing here for decades, jazz standards, a little lounge, a lot of soul. Sit at a table, order a classic cocktail (the Blood and Sand is a yes), and just let the room wash over you. It's one of those places that makes LA feel like it has layers.
If you want to keep going: walk up Hillhurst to Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams (1954 Hillhurst Ave) before they close at 11pm. Brambleberry Crisp or Brown Butter Almond Brittle. Both. You're on a night out.
End the whole thing with a nightcap at Big Bar (1927 Hillhurst Ave), cozy patio, solid cocktails, exactly the right energy to close out the night. Last call feels less sad here somehow.
