Los Feliz

April 2026

Okay so you want the real Los Feliz rundown. Not the Yelp version. The version where someone who's been walking these blocks for years just sits down and tells you what's actually good. Here it is.

Start any morning on Vermont Avenue and you'll figure out the neighborhood fast. Figaro Bistrot (1802 N Vermont Ave) is the one. Sidewalk tables, French press, a croque monsieur that has no business being that good at 9am. It's a Paris-in-the-hills situation and the regulars treat it like their living room, which, kind of, it is. Get here before 10 on a weekend or you're waiting. Street parking on Avocado or Finley usually works.

Skylight Books is right there at 1818 Vermont and it's one of the best independent bookstores in all of LA. Not just for the books, the staff picks shelf alone is worth the trip. They host readings, they know their stuff, and there's always something in the window that makes you stop walking. If you're doing a Vermont Ave morning, Figaro then Skylight is the move.

For coffee that's a little more eyes-down-laptop energy, Cafecito Organico on Hillhurst has a loyal crowd and good cold brew. Low-key, neighborhoody, the kind of place you forget to tell people about because you want to keep it a little for yourself.

Lunch and late afternoon is when Hillhurst Avenue really earns it. Little Dom's at 2128 Hillhurst is the neighborhood Italian that's been doing it right for years, the breakfast all day thing is real, the pasta is legit, and the bar up front is a good stop even if you're just getting a Campari and sitting with it for a while. It's the kind of place you bring your parents and they're immediately relieved. Reservations recommended for dinner, but bar seats are usually walkable.

Ye Rustic Inn at 1831 Hillhurst is a different vibe entirely, dark, wood-paneled, cash-friendly, cold beer, good burger, jukebox energy. It's been here forever and it shows in the best way. Afternoon is ideal, before the dinner crowd figures out what a good room this is. Parking off Franklin or on the side streets near Ambrose.

For tacos, Tacos Tu Madre on Hillhurst is where you go. The al pastor is what you want. Full stop. It's a small spot, there's usually a line on Saturdays, and it moves fast. Don't overthink it, just order the al pastor and maybe a quesabirria if they have it.

Now, the Vista Theatre is back. The Vista Theatre at 4473 Sunset Drive reopened in 2026 after years of anticipation and it is genuinely one of the most beautiful single-screen movie houses in the country. Egyptian Revival interior, the whole thing. Seeing a movie here isn't like seeing a movie anywhere else in LA. Check their calendar and just go, whatever's playing. It's the experience. Parking on the side streets off Sunset, or the lot nearby on Edgecliffe. This is a neighborhood anchor moment, it being open again matters.

While you're on that Sunset stretch, Lazy Acres Natural Market (4521 Sunset Dr) just hit its one-year anniversary at the Los Feliz location and it's become genuinely essential. Great produce, solid prepared foods section, the kind of grocery store where you go in for one thing and come out with a whole plan for dinner. The hot bar is a real lunch option. It fits the neighborhood in a way that feels earned rather than dropped in.

Down the hill a bit, The Dresden at 1760 N Vermont is the one you've heard about and yes it's real and yes you should go. Marty and Elayne played here for decades. The room is time-capsule intact, red booths, low light, a vibe that no designer could manufacture. Get a stiff drink, get the steak Diane if you're eating, and just let the room happen to you. It's open late, the bar crowd gets good after 9, and there is truly nothing else like it in Los Angeles.

For something newer but already locked in, Messhall Kitchen at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd does a solid brunch and dinner with a comfortable, not-trying-too-hard room. Good for groups. The cocktails are well-made and they don't rush you, which in 2026 LA is genuinely a feature.

If you want a proper wine bar moment, Bar Covell at 4628 Hollywood Blvd (right on the border, firmly in the rotation) is the neighborhood wine spot that knows what it's doing without making you feel like you need to know what you're doing. Natural wine forward, the list changes, the staff will actually talk to you about it. Dog friendly on the patio. Go on a Tuesday when it's not shoulder to shoulder.

Fred 62 at 1850 N Vermont is the 24-hour diner that holds everything together. Open till 2am, later on weekends, the kind of menu where nothing is wrong. Late night grilled cheese, eggs at noon, a patty melt when you need a patty melt. It's been an anchor on Vermont forever and it earns that status every single service.

For the park, obviously Griffith Park is right there and it's enormous and most people only see the Observatory. The trails above the Greek Theatre area are where the locals actually go. The Griffith Park Visitor Center is getting a full facelift and expected to reopen around October 2026, so check back on that, it'll be worth a visit when it does. In the meantime, the park itself is wide open. Early morning on the trails before 8am is a different Los Feliz entirely.

The Greek Theatre in the park is one of the best outdoor music venues in the city. Summer shows, good sightlines, you can bring wine in (check the current policy), and the sound is legitimately great. The surrounding neighborhood fills up on show nights so if you're eating nearby first, go early or go late. Vermont gets congested, park on the residential streets west of Vermont and walk down.

Alcove Cafe & Bakery at 1929 Hillhurst is the patio brunch spot with the bakery case you'll stand in front of for too long. Outdoor seating in a garden setup, dog friendly, good for catching up with someone. The cinnamon roll situation is real. Weekend mornings have a wait but it moves.

If you're buying records, Vacation Vinyl on Sunset has a good selection and a genuinely enthusiastic staff that doesn't make you feel dumb for not knowing things. Used and new, strong in indie and alternative, worth a flip-through any time you're on that stretch of Sunset.

That's the neighborhood. Vermont and Hillhurst are the two spines, Griffith Park is the backyard, Sunset connects it east-west. The Dresden for a late drink, Figaro for the morning, Little Dom's when you want to actually sit down, the Vista when you want to remember why movies matter. It all fits together in a way that still feels like a real neighborhood rather than a brand. That's the thing about Los Feliz, it's been itself long enough to actually be itself.
