A Rainy Day in West Hollywood (The Good Kind)
Rain in LA is a gift. Nobody's going anywhere fast, the city smells like eucalyptus and wet concrete, and suddenly every cozy indoor spot feels like a secret. Here's how to spend a slow, drizzly day in WeHo without once wishing it were sunny.
9:30am, Breakfast at Urth Caffé
Start at Urth Caffé on 8565 Melrose Ave. Park in the structure on Westmount just off Melrose, it's free for a couple hours. Grab a window seat inside (the rain makes the garden patio a pass today), order the green tea latte and whatever pastry is calling your name. Take your time. This is the whole vibe of the day.
10:30am, Dig through racks at L.A. Rose Vintage
Walk two blocks east to L.A. Rose Vintage Fashion at 8064 Melrose Ave. It's a tight, treasure-packed shop, the kind where you pull out something incredible from between two things you'd never wear. Budget 45 minutes minimum. Good rainy day energy in here.
11:30am, Flip records at Headline Records
Head back west a bit to Headline Records at 7706 Melrose Ave. It's small, curated, and genuinely good. Flip through the bins while someone else's taste plays over the speakers. Pick up something you've never heard of. That's the rule.
1:00pm, Pizza and wine at Pura Vita
By now you've earned lunch. Drive or grab a Lyft over to Pura Vita Pizzeria at 8274 Santa Monica Blvd. It's a plant-based Italian spot that will absolutely not feel like a sacrifice. Order a margherita or the fennel sausage pie, pour a glass of whatever natural wine they're pouring, and let the afternoon slow all the way down. They do reservations, smart move on a grey day when everyone else has the same idea.
3:00pm, Browse Book Soup
This is the main event. Book Soup at 8818 Sunset Blvd is one of the best independent bookstores in the country, full stop. The fiction section alone could eat an hour. Staff picks are always worth checking. Buy something you weren't planning to. Street parking on Sunset can be rough, try the small lot behind the store off Sherbourne.
4:30pm, Settle in at V Cut Cigar Lounge
A short drive to V Cut at 8172 Melrose Ave. Even if you're not a cigar person, the lounge is moody and warm and exactly right for a rainy late afternoon. Good coffee, good conversation, no rush. This is where the day exhales.
7:00pm, Dinner at Carlitos Gardel
End the night at Carlitos Gardel Argentine Steakhouse, 7963 Melrose Ave. The room is warm and candlelit and the empanadas are serious. Make a reservation, this place fills up. Order the skirt steak, get a Malbec, and stay longer than you planned.
9:00pm, One last drink, then the Troubadour
Check what's on at the Troubadour at 9081 Santa Monica Blvd before you commit to the night ending. If there's a show, go. This stage launched James Taylor and Elton John and Tom Waits. On a rainy Tuesday in WeHo, it might launch something you'll talk about for years.
Rain check redeemed.
