A first-timer's walking tour of Eagle Rock
Park once, walk everywhere. That's the Eagle Rock promise. Drop your car in the free lot behind the Center for the Arts at 2225 Colorado Blvd and give yourself a Saturday morning. Here's exactly how to spend it.
9am, Coffee and a pastry at Milkfarm
Start at Milkfarm (2106 Colorado Blvd). It's a cheese shop that also does serious coffee and a short but perfect pastry case. Order a cortado and whatever the croissant situation is that day. Grab a seat at the counter and ease in slow.
9:45am, Wander into Old Focals
A two-minute walk east lands you at Old Focals (2120 Colorado Blvd). It's a coffee shop inside a vintage eyewear store, which sounds like a bit but is actually just a very good room to be in. Bring your second coffee here if you need it. Browse the frames. You don't have to buy anything.
10:15am, Relentless Brewing for brunch if you're hungry
Right across the street at Relentless Brewing (2133 Colorado Blvd) they do a weekend brunch that's worth stopping for. Make a reservation ahead if you're going with people. The cocktails are solid and the room is bright. This is your sit-down moment if Milkfarm didn't hold you.
11am, Dig through vinyl at Permanent Records
Cut one block north on Cypress to Permanent Records (1906 Cypress Ave). One of the best independent record stores in the city. Curated and weird in the best way. They pour cold beer on tap if you're ready for that, no judgment, it's almost noon. Budget 30 minutes minimum in here.
11:45am, Lunch at La Sorted's
Walk back down to Colorado and head west to La Sorted's (1827 Colorado Blvd). Italian deli and market, sandwiches built the right way. Order the meatball or whatever the board says is the move that day. It's counter service, quick, and genuinely great. Eat outside on the sidewalk if there's a bench open.
1pm, Browse Eagle Rock Blvd
Now jump in your car or ride-share three minutes north to Eagle Rock Blvd and do the top stretch on foot. Start at Leanna Lin's Wonderland (5024 Eagle Rock Blvd), part gallery, part gift shop, totally charming. Then hit Ruby Bakery (5042 Eagle Rock Blvd) next door for something sweet. A cookie, a slice, whatever they have. You've earned it.
1:30pm, Coffee at Armon's Cafe
Right up the block at Armon's Cafe (5056 Eagle Rock Blvd), grab an afternoon coffee and slow down. Small, neighborhood, no agenda. This block has a good pace to it.
2pm, Vidiots
Walk or drive down to Vidiots (4884 Eagle Rock Blvd). If you don't know it yet: it's a nonprofit film library and cinema that moved here from Santa Monica and the neighborhood adopted it completely. Check what's screening. Even if you're not catching a film, step inside and look around. The vibe is rare.
3pm, Capri Club for a Negroni
Head to Capri Club (4604 Eagle Rock Blvd) and post up. Italian-American classics, a whole Negroni menu, and a room that feels like it's been there forever even though it hasn't. This is your afternoon drink stop. Order a Negroni. Sit at the bar if you can.
5pm, End at Colorado Bar
Make your way back to Colorado and finish the day at Colorado Bar (2640 Colorado Blvd). Genuine dive. Well drinks are cheap, the pool table is free, and everyone in there lives in the neighborhood. No pretense. This is the real closer. Stay as long as you want.
Eagle Rock is one of those places that still feels like a neighborhood rather than a destination. Walk it once and you'll understand why people who live here don't really want to leave.
