The Helms Bakery complex is the best block in Culver City
April 2026
The Helms Bakery complex on Helms Avenue in Culver City was built in 1931 to bake bread. It baked bread for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. It baked bread for the entirety of World War II. It closed as a bakery in 1969 and has been slowly transforming into a design and dining destination ever since.
The complex now houses furniture showrooms, design studios, restaurants, and bars in the original brick buildings. Lukshon is in the complex. Salt and Straw ice cream has a location here. The architecture gives the whole thing a coherence that most mixed-use developments can't fake. Go on a Saturday afternoon when the complex is active and the restaurants are serving lunch and the design shops are open.
