A rainy day itinerary for Culver City
Rain in LA hits different. Everyone panics, the streets clear out, and suddenly Culver City becomes yours. Here's how to spend it right.
9:30am, Coffee first, always. Park on Washington near Helms and walk into Cognoscenti Coffee at 8709 Washington Blvd. It's tucked inside the Helms complex, which is honestly the perfect rainy-day architecture, covered walkways, warm light, the smell of old wood. Get the single-origin pour-over and take your time. Nobody's rushing anywhere today.
10:15am, Wander the Helms complex. You're already here, so drift through Helms Bakery at 8700 Washington. The building dates to 1931 and it shows, in the best way. Furniture shops, design studios, little nooks. Rain on those skylights sounds incredible.
11am, Browse something beautiful. Drive or walk five minutes to The Ripped Bodice at 3806 Main St, the romance-only bookstore that somehow feels like the coziest room in the city on a gray day. The staff picks are always good. You will buy something. Accept it.
12pm, Lunch on Main. Walk two doors down to LaRocco's Pizzeria at 3819 Main St. Grab a slice and a cocktail. It's cheap, it's unpretentious, and the pizza is exactly what you want when it's cold outside. Skip the patio today, sit inside near the window.
1:30pm, Slow afternoon read. Head to Village Well Books & Coffee at 9900 Culver Blvd. Order something warm, find a corner seat, and actually read the book you just bought at The Ripped Bodice. This place gets it, good coffee, good shelves, zero pressure.
3pm, A quiet detour. Duck over to the Hare Krishna Temple at 3764 Watseka Ave. It's open to visitors and genuinely peaceful. The garden, even in the rain, has this specific calm that's hard to find anywhere else in the city. Worth ten quiet minutes.
4pm, Regroup at Stanley's. Stanley's Wet Goods at 9620 Venice Blvd is a coffee shop with a name that's perfect for today. Get a latte, stay a while. It's the kind of place where an afternoon can disappear without you minding.
6pm, Early drinks at Nightjar. Head to Platform LA and find Nightjar at 8850 Washington Blvd. The bar program here is serious. The covered outdoor space at Platform actually works in light rain, heaters, good vibes. Order whatever they're shaking and settle in.
7:30pm, Dinner at Mizlala. You're already at Platform, so walk over to Mizlala West at 8850 Washington Blvd. Get the shakshuka and the roasted cauliflower. It's warm, it's filling, it's exactly right for the weather.
9pm, One more drink. End at The Cinema Bar, 3967 Sepulveda Blvd. Cash only, open until 2am, the kind of bar that's been here forever and will outlast everything. It's dark and it's cheap and on a rainy Tuesday night it's the best seat in the city.
Park note: the lot behind Main Street near LaRocco's is free and easy. For the Helms/Platform stretch, street parking on Washington usually opens up, especially in the rain when everyone's convinced themselves to stay home.
They stayed home. You didn't. Good call.
