A rainy day itinerary for Koreatown
Rain in K-Town hits different. The neon blurs, the street food smells sharper, and every restaurant window fogs up from the inside. Here's how to spend a slow, wet day here without ever needing to dry off completely.
10:30am, Start at Hanok
Park on 6th between Normandie and Harvard, meters are usually open and you'll be walking this stretch all day. Walk into Hanok at 3550 W 6th St and let it warm you up. Get the single-origin pour-over if you want something clean, or go for one of their Korean-style lattes if you need something a little sweeter and more comforting. The space is quiet and unhurried. Stay as long as you want.
12:30pm, Lunch at Mapo Kkak Doo Gee
Head east on 6th to 3611 W 6th St. Mapo Kkak Doo Gee is the kind of Korean spot that doesn't try to explain itself to you, just go in, point at what the next table has, and trust it. Great for a group if you brought friends, perfect solo at the counter on a grey afternoon.
2:30pm, Walk it off, then duck into Kobawoo
If you're still hungry (you might not be, but still), Kobawoo House at 698 S Vermont Ave is a short drive or a 15-minute walk south. Their bossam, boiled pork belly with cabbage, kimchi, and fresh oysters, is one of the best things you can eat in this city on a cold day. Get it. Share it. Order the jokbal too if you're feeling ambitious.
4:00pm, Afternoon drink at Dan Sung Sa
This is the move. Dan Sung Sa at 3317 W 6th St is a Korean pojangmacha bar, think dim lighting, wooden booths, handwritten menus on the walls, soju flowing freely. It opens in the afternoon and it's exactly the right energy for a rainy Tuesday. Get a soju cocktail and some anju (bar snacks) and just... sit there for a while.
6:30pm, Dinner at Sun Nong Dan
Walk or drive over to 710 S Western Ave. Sun Nong Dan's galbi jjim, braised short rib stew, is the entire point of coming here. It arrives in a massive stone pot, bubbling and deeply savory, with soft-cooked ribs that fall apart. Get the spicy version if you can handle it. You'll be warm from the inside out within minutes.
8:30pm, Nightcap at Normandie Club
End the night at Normandie Club, 3719 W 6th St. The cocktails are inventive and well-made, house-made ingredients, smart riffs on classics. The room feels like a treat. It's the kind of bar that makes you feel like you planned the whole day perfectly, even if you just stumbled into it.
Rain check on that patio next time.
